Apr 16/08 - At the Prague Castle, one of the biggest castle in the world.
Lots of sights to see, worth getting a Prague Card (4 days = 790 Kc).
The St Vitus Cathedral and the Golden Lane are two of the most popular sights. The Golden Lane can get very, very crowded - so get there early or late. If you are getting to the castle, one word of advice - take the tram up to the gate, don't walk up the stairs unless you are fit as a marathon runner, save the energy for strolling through the vast castle ground.
We visited the St Vitus early in the morning - loved the Alfons Mucha window on the left side after the entrance. Took photos of the window and they all turn out lovely - even with a small digital camera. Outside the cathedral, on the right side, we found a fence depicting the twelve signs of the zodiac.
We then went to the Old Royal Palace, the Golden Lane, Dalibor Tower and the Royal Garden.
The South Gardens were closed.
The Golden Lane was delightful with small cottages built into the castle wall. It was very crowded even in spring time, can't imagine how it would be in the summer tourist season.
We quickly zoomed by and went to Dalibor tower, once used as prison and torture chamber.
The Royal Garden was refreshingly peaceful devoid of tourist mob. There is a singing fountain in front of the Belvedere. Went up close and we heard the music from the water hitting the bronze bowl. The view of the castle and the St Vitus from the garden was just postcard perfect.
After conquering the castle, we walked down the castle steps to the Little Quarter. Tourists arriving in buses will miss the experience of strolling down these long flights of stairs.
